WADJEMUP CUP A GREAT SUCCESS
The Clontarf Foundation´s Wadjemup Cup 2009 has been a fabulous event and by all accounts all who attended and participated had a wonderful time. The weather was kind throughout the three days which made for an excellent standard of football.
The majority of boys and staff arrived Friday afternoon, November 13 after a very smooth trip over on the Rottnest Express Ferry. The 25-minute ferry ride allowed our boys plenty of time to acclimatise and settle into the Kingston Barracks after being welcomed to the Island by Reg Yarran from the Rottnest Island Authority.
Friday night’s festivities located at ´Heritage Common´ included a heartfelt Welcome to Country speech from local Elder Cedric Jacobs followed by a fabulous performances by Dave ´Tiger´ Regan and the Doorum Dance group.
Numbers swelled with holiday makers on the Island as the concert built momentum and the relaxed tone of the evening made for some Elvis like dance moves, led by Italian rock star Karl Pirrottina.
Well rested and filled full of adrenalin the boys began battle for the converted Wadjemup Cup with five Academies contesting-Yule Brook (Maddington, Perth), Clontarf (Perth), Gilmore (Kwinana), Midwest (Geraldton) and WA´s latest addition Roebourne.
Yule Brook and Midwest kicked things off and the pace was frenetic. All participants played their hearts out and displayed the Clontarf Spirit of good sportsmanship.
It was a fine display of quality football played at blistering pace and with all the usual tricks of Clontarf Academies. After the qualifying games the two grand-finalists were the undefeated Midwest and Yule brook with Clontarf desperately unlucky, falling three-goals short of making the premiership match.
The midday break in proceedings enabled us find out Clontarf´s fastest man and biggest kick with the Wadjemup sprint and the long bomb competitions.
The sprint was taken out by Johnno Moore from the Clontarf Academy in spectacular fashion while Yule Brook´s Dale Hart dropped the ball beautifully on the slipper to pump out a 65-metre torpedo taking the long bomb competition. Well done fellas.
The grand-final proved to be a very hard fought match with every player on the ground going in hard, making the ball their target and showing tremendous enthusiasm.
With only minutes to go Midwest had a narrow three-goal lead which was protected by their back line as Yule Brook attacked courageously but couldn´t convert their opportunities.
In celebration of the Wadjemup Cup, presentations where made by Laurie Omara, Chairman of the Rottnest Island Authority to five best players (one from each team), two spirit of Wadjemup medals and the grand’finals best player.
A special mention of thanks to Marcia Czerniak and Bronwyn Pearson from the Rottnest Island Authority for there great work in putting together a most enjoyable and well organised stay in Wadjemup Country.
From the Clontarf Foundation, Marcus Harrold did a wonderful job overseeing the whole event pulling it all together and the great work of Matt Clucas and the Sevenoaks boys for their umpiring duties.
It was fabulous to see Clontarf Chairman Ross Kelly and board member Marilyn Morgan make the trip across as well as other VIPs Karen Jacobs, Andrew Burns, Shane Volk, Ron Gidgup, Stephen Hill and Casey Sibasado from Fremantle Football Club. Thank you very much for your support.
Congratulations to the 2009 Wadjemup Premiers, Midwest Football Academy, all other medal recipients and to all students and staff from the Yule Brook, Gilmore, Roebourne and Clontarf Academies who participated.
