YONGAS IN WADJEMUP 2009
Five Academy’s from across the state turned out to contest for the Annual Wadjemup Cup Football Carnival at Rottnest Island last weekend.
Now in its third year, the Wadjemup Cup is a joint initiative between the Rottnest Island Authority and the Clontarf Foundation geared toward reconciliation for the Island.
Yule Brook (Maddington), Midwest (Geraldton), Gilmore (Kwinana), Clontarf (Perth) and Roebourne Football Academy all made the journey and proceeded to set the Island alight with some electrifying football over the weekend.
Arriving on the Island late Friday afternoon the boys greeted by the scores of quokkas out for nightly feed before being treated to some outstanding live entertainment in the form of Dave “Tiger” Regan and the Doorum Dance Group.
After a great show and a rousing guest appearance from Karl Pirrottina, all Academies made the trek out to the Kingstown barracks to settle in for the night.

Welcome to Country
An early start the following morning saw the boys up at five, obviously keen to attack the day and play some footy. After an inspirational welcome to country from Cedric Jacobs representing the traditional owners of the land, Yule brook opened the carnival with the first game against our Harmony Fields Cup nemesis, Midwest. In what was yet another thrilling encounter, the Midwest maintained the upper hand by running out victors by a couple of goals.
Our next games against Gilmore, and Roebourne gave the Yongas a couple of great wins with our percentage just netting us a place in the final at the expense of Clontarf. The boys were itching for another crack at Midwest and in what was another bruising encounter Midwest again came out on top to take the Wadjemup Cup to Geraldton.

Dennis Ward took out the Yongas Best & Fairest award for the carnival after turning out stellar performances in each of the games with Corey Khan and Dwayn Bolton also showing excellent touch throughout the day.
Dale Hart also managed to take out the long bomb contest with a massive torpedo in excess of 60 metres. After the closing ceremony we made our way to the beach to rest some tired muscles and cool off in the sweltering heat.

Saturday night saw all Academies head into town to watch a movie and then in a testament to their efforts during the days’ games, the weary lads headed straight to bed. Sunday morning didn’t have the same bright and chirpy start with the lads needing to be dragged out of bed to grab a quick feed before jumping on the 8am ferry back to Perth.
The fantastic location, weather and fellowship over the weekend made sure the Yongas had a great time left them as keen as mustard to go one step further in 2010 and take the Wadjemup Cup back to Yule Brook.
