ROEBOURNE'S WADJEMUP DEBUT

The Roebourne Football Academy was recently invited to attend the 3rd Annual Wadjemup Cup on Rottnest Island. This was the first time that the Roebourne Academy competed in the carnival.

We left very early in the morning on Thursday (5am!) and full credit to the guys for being up and ready to go at such an early hour. It was a bit of a hairy start with a couple of unfortunate incidents from Kai namely forgetting to pick Lincoln up, but we got away well and made good time on the road.

After lunch in Carnarvon we drove to Geraldton and were welcomed at the Midwest Academy by Coags who gave us the run of the place for the night with pool, ping pong and pizza!

Everyone agreed that it was a very cool place indeed. We hit the road again fairly early on Friday and got to Fremantle by noon, just in time to jump on the ferry to Rottnest.

We were welcomed to country when we arrived by Reg Yarran (and later by Cedric Jacobs) and then taken by bus to the Kingstown Barracks where we would be staying for the weekend and where a hoard of ferocious quokkas also lived!

We enjoyed a great night of music by Tiger (Pirra on backing vocals) and dance by the Doorum Dancers. All the Roebourne guys showed everyone their singing abilities and Byron gave a great speech thanking everyone at the end of the night.

The next day was all about footy.

The Roebourne Team: Cadmen Stevens, Byron Boorunga, Rodrick Kelly, Lincon Aubrey, Lachlan Thompson, Tyler Lockyer, Cheridan Lockyer, John Brown, Lester Body, Alfred (Caveman), Karna Smith, Brad Biggas, David Garlett, Mitchell Walker and Harley Alec.

We played our first game against Gilmore Academy, second game against Clontarf Academy and the third and final game against Yule Brook.

It was great footy and there was heaps of valuable experience gained for our next carnival. Mitchell Walker won the Clontarf Spirit Award for his outstanding football skills with only one arm!

Lincoln Aubrey won Roebourne’s Best Player Award; he was consistent and kept attacking the ball throughout the carnival.

The Roebourne Football Academy were a credit to themselves with great behaviour and manners for the whole carnival. We look forward to coming back to the Wadjemup Cup in future years and bringing home a trophy!
