KIMBERLEY CROWN TO COWBOYS

The rain hammered down on Friday morning, February 26 as the Halls Creek Year 5,6 and 7 boys packed their Troop Carriers for the 370km mission to Kununurra.

In high spirits despite the miserable weather the discussion en-route mostly revolved around wet weather footy tactics with the occasional interruption to chase a goanna into the bush.

Already filthy the Halls Creek Cowboys pulled up to the Kununurra oval with enough time for a quick warm up.

The game was close. The game was wet. The game could have been changed to water-polo for all the rain we had. From the opening bounce Halls Creek’s taller centre-line led the charge and they were quickly in front by 3-goals.

After half time though, a solid fight back saw Kununurra take the lead by a point midway through the premiership quarter. This gave the Halls Creek back-line the chance to show its true grit and some solid defence slowed the Kununurra forwards.

The two teams went goal for goal for the last quarter and Halls Creek were lucky to be in front at the final whistle. The two teams thanked each other for a game played in the right spirit and Halls Creek were off to Chicken Treat – a privilege that is hard to come by for these Cowboys.

It was a long drive home and energy levels in the vehicles were high. About 100km’s into the drive it became evident that some energy needed to be expended in order to make for a more peaceful journey.

A short road-run and some road side push-ups did the trick and by the time we pulled into town it was the most the boys could do to watch the senior fellas take on the Halls Creek CDEP workers.

Great effort guys.

Best and Fairest: Sam Petrevski-Seton, Justin Mosquito, Lucas Long.
