JOINING OF FORCES
On a recent senior end of year trip to Cairns by Jabiru, Gunbalanya and Yirrkala Clontarf Academies, the students and staff could see the importance of giving back and engaging in a community service activity. The Salvation Army Cairns were contacted and arrangements were made to join forces to help those in need at Christmas.
Fiona Oliver (Community Services Officer – Cairns Corps) spoke with our young men, giving them a brief history of the Salvation Army and their extensive services they provide Australia-wide and internationally. Fiona also spoke of the importance of an education and how it is the major ‘key’ in life.
We then got down to working as a team packing of over sixty Christmas hampers, re organising foodbank supplies and sorting donated toys.
Overall it was a great rewarding experience for students and staff and something we will continue to do in years to come on trips away.
Fiona (Salvation Army) and Clontarf Academy staff also spoke of how this could be just the start of something bigger; where Clontarf Academies Australia-wide join forces with the Salvation Army in their regions at Christmas time to help those people and families in need.
